NEW SEATTLE PUB - Congratulations and best wishes to Belfastman Peter Johnson on his new Irish pub that opens today in Seattle. Finn Mac Cools is located at 4217 University Way NE, right at the heart of Seattle's University District. Every Wednesday is special Irish Music night while lunch and dinner are served every day. MUSIC LOSS - Derek Bell, 67, a member of the Chieftains for the past 30 years, died suddenly following minor surgery in Phoenix. A native of Belfast, the Chieftain's bookish-looking harper with the thick glasses was also a classically trained musician, having appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Pittsburgh, Moscow, London and Budapest. He was also a composer, with symphonies, chamber music and piano pieces to his credit. The Chieftains have been the most influential of the Irish folk musicians, credited with doing more to spread appreciation of traditional Irish music than any other group in Ireland's history.
PATRICK'S BIRTHPLACE - Scotland's village of Old Kilpatrick in Dumbartonshire is pressing its claim as the official birthplace of St. Patrick and notes that the village name, Kilpatrick, is Gaelic for Patrick's church. Patrick was a Christian of Roman parentage believed by the locals to have been born just outside the village in 375 AD. Old Kilpatrick was the western terminal point of the Roman Antonine Wall that crossed Scotland from Clyde to Forth.
IRISH SESAME STREET - The children's show is considering a version set on a Belfast street that would tackle the problems of Northern Ireland. Irish puppets would join the regular Sesame Street characters to promote tolerance among pre-school children of all faiths. The Irish version would feature children from Catholic and Protestant communities playing together, with the essential Sesame ingredients of Muppets, live-action inserts and educational material.

August 2002
Publisher Cian of Washington Volume No. 2 Issue No. 4 July 23, 2002
The reason this August newsletter is going out earlier than normal, is I am combining info for the Enumclaw Highland Games.
The Mt Vernon games was another great success this year with a lot of the clan in attendance (27) with a last minute potluck on Saturday night which had a lot of excellent food brought by members.
We tried the raffle Idea at Mt Vernon and it will work, the reason we are having a raffle is to raise money to purchase our own Clan Cian gonfalon attached to this email is an Clan Gordon gonfalon to give you an Idea what we are looking for.
The Clan would like to welcome the following families who Joined Clan Cian at Mt Vernon.
Allan and Louise Kelly, April Lynn Konyu ( Downs) and Family, John Kennedy and Family, Céad mile fáilte to you all.
The Enumclaw games are this weekend and it will be a very busy time for all of us starting with me on Tuesday, your chieftain is a member of the camping committee and will have all your camping info, if you paid though me for camping spots you will find me very easy, I am the crazed looking Irishman in a golf cart or my trailer is in the NE corner of the camping area with an Clan Cian banner on the front and the Erin go Braugh on a flag pole on the rear of the trailer if you have not paid though me and paid direct to SHGA camping go to the check in table, if you have not paid at all the Football field is open for $12.00 a night or you can sub lease a spot from another clan member speaking of sub leasing our Regional Chieftain needs to sub lease a spot, each spot is 20 X 40 so there is room for 2 or more tents on each spot.
Clan McAle has graciously offer some spots in there area but space is limited.
Also Clan McAle is hosting a interclan potluck Saturday night and your invited
Friday night the Clan(s) will be busy with opening ceremonies and events that evening.
Saturday and Sunday Clan events: parade at 12pm or there abouts ( hurry up and wait)
Those in the clan tent ask if you are not working the clan tent please stay out, we will have a hospitality tent set up next door for people to get out of the sun and iced water will be available. And do not forget the raffle, Bonnie will need help! she will need people to go around and hit the other clan tents. So if you are sitting around sharping your swords for the next invasion you can get off your kesters and help out.
Garage Sale
On the 31st of August Clan Cian will have their first garage sale from 9am to 3pm so bring all your crown jewels and other noble junk you have hidden away. Afterwards there will be a pot luck barbecue.

March-Márta 2002
My Sincere apologies to the entire clan in Washington State, to answer the questions why I am apologizing to you, you ask? well for the lateness of this newsletter and what is happening March 16th, I have made numerous phone calls to Fado's to confirm or not confirm the dungeon reservation. I made this request early Feb and then again a week later since then I have made numerous phone calls down there and they tell me that Eric is having a nervous break down. Today I got a hold of Eric the poor guy has been though the ringer( dealing with the City of Seattle) over the St Patrick's day weekend festivities. We have the dungeon however at 4:30pm they are charging a $10.00 cover for a Band called the "Clumsy Lovers" they were voted the Best NW Irish Band and Eric has been courting them to play at Fado's for months. There will be a breakfast in the AM like last year and then go march in the Parade. We will meet at 4th and Jefferson ( At Bum Park) after the Parade we will follow the pipers as a Clan and head to Fado's for lunch and Craic ( Irish Fun). For the members of the Clan who have not been to Fado's, they are at 801 First Ave downtown Seattle. For those who have Children Under the age of 21 the dungeon is considered an over 21 area they do however have the restaurant area that is for under 21. ( Don't try to put fake mustaches on the kids ) Kilts are required for this event if you have one, if not do not fret about it make sure you wear your Clan Cian Shirt.
As for the web page being updated my time has been really limited since January and there are so many hours in the day, but it will be updated soon if not this next week.
The Games are coming upon us quickly I have already received 3 invites to the games so far.
Shirts are on order for those who prepaid if you need a Shirt and do not have time to send a check go to paypal on the web use my email address JPNAVIN@W-LINK.NET and pay me that way make sure I have style ,color, size for adults I recommend XL. I still have time to add to the order. Shirts are $20.00 Long sleeve is $30.00 I will have a small number of shirts this year due to myself trying to get a business off the ground.
With the starting of the Game season in march, I will posting a newsletter every month to keep everyone informed to changes, camping information and what's happening.
Creative Irish Artist Network
Bonnie needs to get this tied down to what games you all want to do this at I recommend Bellingham and Mt Vernon and Tacoma or Whidbey Island and everyone who is participating in this has to help out with paying for the booth.
Items that are sold will help pay you back for the booth and materials and the rest will help the Clan expenses during the year. (for info, call Bonnie at 425-271-8915 or leahysweeney@juno.com

IRISH QUOTATIONS OF THE MONTH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every Political Party in Ireland was founded
on the gun.
John Hume, attributed in 1995
Politics is the chloroform of the Irish people,
or, rather, the hashish.
Oliver St. John Gogarty, 1878-1957
Our ancestors believed in magic, prayers,
trickery, browbeating and bullying. I think it
would be fair to sum that list up as
'Irish politics'.
